Overcoming Setbacks: Strategies to Stay Motivated and Achieve Your Goals

Have you ever set a goal, felt excited at first, but found yourself ready to give up halfway through? Struggling to maintain your commitment is more common than you might think. You're not alone. I'm here to share some powerful strategies to help you push through tough times and stick to your goals, even on the hardest days.

Even as a coach, I have days when my goals seem unattainable. I contemplate giving up, and I know I'm not alone in this. These challenging moments determine whether I'll achieve my goals or not. Over the years, I've learned to view these obstacles differently. It's not always about sticking with the original plan. Instead, it involves taking a careful audit to determine necessary changes for success.

Audit 1: Goal Adjustment

The first audit I perform is a goal adjustment. I review my initial goal considering current circumstances and ask whether any internal or external factors have changed, making my goal less achievable. I also evaluate if changes within my control require adjusting my goal to keep it realistic. Life happens. It’s outside of our control. Instead of letting this overwhelm me, I embrace change, and adjust my goals accordingly. For recovering perfectionists like me, accepting this flexibility can be difficult, but it is essential for progress.

Audit 2: Support Maintenance

The second audit focuses on support maintenance, recognizing that no one achieves success alone. While parts of the journey may feel lonely, I often rely on a support system. This system evolves as my journey progresses. People who were helpful initially may no longer be the right fit, and others might emerge as valuable supporters later on. Accepting that both my goals and my support structures need to change over time is crucial. To maintain this support, I ask myself:

  • Who am I listening to?

  • What am I listening to?

  • Does my support need to change and how?

Audit 3: Mindset Tune-Up

The final and most impactful audit is a mindset tune-up. Since I talk and listen to myself the most - and the same goes for you, our mindset significantly influences our actions. Even with a clear goal, solid strategy, and great support, a misaligned mindset can hold us back. To recalibrate my mindset, I ask:

  • Why do I think what I think?

  • Is it true?

  • Is it rational?

  • What's another perspective on the current situation?

Embrace Change and Stay Committed

Those are the three audits that help me remain committed to my goals and myself. Thank you for taking this journey with me, investing in a harmonious life, and trusting me to guide you towards a happier, calmer, stronger you.
